Eleven fertiliser and
trace element products from Law Fertilisers, the independent company
supplying fertilisers and crop protection to the market, have been
certified for organic use by the Soil Association. They include
Laws High K, Laws High N and Laws High P, as well as boron, copper,
iron, manganese and zinc. There is also Laws Calcium, Laws High
P Plus and Laws Foliar N.
Mark Law, Managing Director of Law Fertilisers, explains that the
company has been inspected and has satisfied the requirements of
the Soil Association standards for certified products. “Our
certificate of registration was issued this month. This means that
organic and indeed conventional farmers can use this range of fertilisers
with the confidence that they are of renewable, natural origin and
are formulated to a very high standard for optimal availability
to the crop and easy and accurate application.”
“The organic market is increasing both here in the UK and
abroad and these specialist growers expect to produce crops of high
quality and yield, just like their conventional counterparts. But
unless crop inputs are balanced with crop off take, there is a real
danger that soils in organic farming will be significantly depleted.
This will undermine the sustainability of organic farming, as well
as its credibility. It also contravenes the EU organic regulations
to maintain soil fertility and cross compliance requirements. Using
our natural plant-based fertilisers, soil fertility can be improved
in a sustainable way and crops allowed to respond by improving yields
and better quality. Trace elements can boost growth and rectify
any deficiencies that may arise,” reminds Mark.
Mark points out that Laws Fertilisers’ products are consistent
and effective as well as natural and safe to the operator, the environment
and the food being grown. “The natural components of our fertilisers
are also more readily available and more easily taken up by the
plant than synthetic equivalents.”
“For example Law’s High P is significantly more efficient
than rock phosphate which is not readily available unless soils
are very acid and is more available for plant uptake over the whole
growing season than TSP which reacts very quickly with free calcium
in the soil the form insoluble compounds,” explains Mr. Law.
These products are fully approved by the Organic Farmers and Growers
and many other certifying bodies. The Soil Association is the only
certification body that requires a derogation for these macronutrients.
Laws can apply to the Soil Association for a derogation to use its
fertilisers by preparing appropriate documentation to support the
request. It is rare not to obtain permission to use,” says
Mark Law.
Law Fertilisers have pioneered the development of all vital plant
nutrients into compounds which are readily available to the growing
organic crop. Each granule has a specific concentration and can
be blended with other nutrients to suit plant, soil or livestock
requirements.
